Two trading firms quantify their exposure

Wintermute and GSR have disclosed Binance exposure as a share of their respective net equity, providing company-specific information about the incident's reach beyond the exchange. Both executives also expressed confidence that their firms could continue operating.

Wintermute founder and chief executive Evgeny Gaevoy said its exposure was below 20% of net equity. His October 29 post, published at 22:15 UTC, said he did not foresee disruption to Wintermute's operations.

GSR chief executive Xin Song put its exposure below 5% of net equity at 22:45 UTC. He said GSR was working with exchange contacts to understand the issue and determine how it could help, and did not anticipate material disruption to normal business.

Exposure is not a confirmed loss

Neither statement gives a dollar amount for exposure or establishes a realized financial loss. The percentages describe how the executives framed their firms' positions; they should not be recast as amounts stolen from either company.

The denominators also matter. Five percent of one firm's net equity and 20% of another's do not reveal their relative dollar exposures without knowing both equity bases. And “below” is an upper-bound description, not an exact percentage.

Similarly, expectations about operational continuity are management assessments. They are not independent guarantees about every future transaction or evidence resolving Binance's own financial position.

Why liquidity providers' statements matter

GSR's description of market making explains that the activity supplies liquidity to buyers and sellers. Its services span exchange trading and institutional execution. That role makes a trading firm's ability to operate relevant to counterparties, rather than solely to the firm's shareholders.

However, these two posts do not measure market-wide liquidity, order-book depth or realized disruption. The specific news is that the firms acknowledged exposure, put relative limits around it and stated their operational expectations. Broader conclusions require additional evidence.
