New exposure restricted, position management continues

CoinDCX said at 04:08 UTC on October 30 that futures trading had temporarily moved to reduce-only mode following developments affecting a global liquidity provider. No restoration time was given.

Customers cannot open new futures positions or increase existing quantities. They can still reduce or close positions and add or remove margin. CoinDCX also said deposits and withdrawals were functioning normally and described customer funds as safe.

The public statement did not identify the provider. In a report published at 05:43 UTC, CoinDesk said a CoinDCX spokesperson identified Binance. That link is attributed to CoinDesk's reporting, rather than presented as wording from the exchange's public notice.

Margin is not position quantity

Margin and position quantity are different concepts. Margin is the collateral supporting a position, while quantity describes the size of the contract exposure. Permission to adjust collateral does not mean permission to add more contracts.

CoinDCX's margin-adjustment documentation explains that adding or removing margin changes the liquidation price displayed for a position. It separately describes limits on position and order sizes associated with leverage. Those mechanics help explain why margin management can remain available when increases in quantity are restricted.

Existing positions still carry market risk

A reduce-only setting is not protection against price losses. CoinDCX's liquidation explanation says an exchange can automatically close a position when its margin falls below the required maintenance level. It also describes a liquidation clearance fee deducted from margin when a futures position is liquidated.

The company's assurance about customer funds should therefore not be confused with a guarantee that leveraged trades cannot lose value. This notice concerns an operational restriction, not a promise about trading outcomes.
