A public petition urging the United Kingdom to adopt a forward-looking strategy for blockchain and stablecoins is rapidly gaining traction, thanks in large part to support from Coinbase.

The petition, published on September 3, 2025 on the UK government’s official website, calls for the creation of a clear regulatory framework to support stablecoins, drive blockchain adoption, and appoint a dedicated blockchain “czar” to guide policy. It gained visibility this week after Coinbase sent in-app notifications to its users, encouraging them to sign. Screenshots shared on social media showed the exchange using slogans like “Help the UK lead stablecoin innovation now.”

As of publication, the petition has collected more than 5,000 signatures — already halfway toward the 10,000 threshold required for an official government response. If the petition surpasses 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for parliamentary debate. The campaign will remain open until March 3, 2026.

A push for regulatory clarity and innovation

The petition outlines three main objectives: to build a regulatory framework for stablecoins and tokenization, encourage government adoption of blockchain technology, and appoint a senior figure to coordinate crypto policy.

It stresses that stablecoins represent the foundation of a future tokenized economy, pointing to the United States as an example. There, regulators have signaled a preference for stablecoins over central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Supporters of the petition argue that the UK risks losing its edge if it doesn’t establish a strategy soon.

“This is a question of national interest to preserve the competitiveness of the City of London and sterling’s role as a global reserve currency,” the petition reads.

Coinbase’s role in UK crypto policy

Coinbase has been vocal in shaping crypto policy in the UK. On July 31, it released a satirical video titled “Everything is Fine,” mocking Britain’s financial system with upbeat lyrics and music set against visuals of inflation, poverty, and economic struggle.

Just days later, on Aug. 5, former UK Chancellor and now Coinbase adviser George Osborne published an op-ed in the Financial Times. He criticized the UK for lagging behind in the digital asset sector, particularly in stablecoin innovation, warning that the absence of clear policies could hinder the nation’s competitiveness.

Cointelegraph reached out to Coinbase for comment on its role in promoting the petition, but did not receive a response before publication.

Correction — 2026-09-07: The petition was published on September 3, 2025, not in July. Reaching 100,000 signatures qualifies a petition for consideration for debate; it does not guarantee a debate. The original publication date and historical signature count are retained.
