Coinbase has taken a major step toward merging centralized and decentralized trading, rolling out native access to Solana-based tokens through a built-in DEX integration that bypasses the traditional listing process.
Andrew Allen, a protocol specialist at Coinbase, announced on X that users can now trade the full universe of Solana assets directly through the exchange’s interface. The integration routes trades through Solana DEX infrastructure, enabling immediate access to tokens with sufficient onchain liquidity.
“For issuers and builders, this means you can reach millions of Coinbase users without a formal listing,” Allen said, adding that Solana-native assets will soon appear directly inside the Coinbase app.

The move mirrors Coinbase’s August upgrade, when the exchange enabled similar DEX-powered access to tokens on Base, its Ethereum layer-2 network, and laid out plans to expand support across additional chains.

Solana DeFi Surges as Institutional Interest Grows
Coinbase’s timing reflects Solana’s accelerating momentum across DeFi markets. On the same day, Ellipsis Labs unveiled a fully onchain perpetuals exchange built on Solana, featuring an integrated risk and matching engine. The platform is currently in private beta.
A new RedStone “Solana Lending Markets Report 2025” highlights rapidly growing institutional engagement, stating that Solana DeFi now supports “institutional-grade strategies” and continues to post some of the strongest lending and trading activity in crypto.
According to RedStone, Solana has processed peak daily DEX volumes of $35.9 billion and is increasingly positioned to lead tokenized real-world asset deployments and onchain institutional capital flows.
“Bringing traditional finance onchain at scale can unlock trillions,” the report noted. “Solana’s infrastructure is well-placed to capture significant share in this expansion.”
Centralized and Decentralized Exchanges Converge
Coinbase’s Solana rollout underscores a larger structural shift: centralized exchanges are evolving into user-friendly gateways for decentralized trading infrastructure.
1inch co-founder Sergej Kunz argued this year that centralized exchanges will eventually act mainly as front ends for DeFi, as liquidity, execution speed, and user experience continue improving on decentralized rails.
Recent data backs the trend. DefiLlama reports that DEXs processed nearly $12 billion in trades over the past 24 hours — far above Coinbase’s spot volume of $2.56 billion and approaching Binance’s $18 billion.
Other major exchanges are following the same path. OKX added DEX trading in mid-November, while Binance rolled out CeFi-to-DeFi swaps across Solana, Ethereum, Base, and BNB Chain earlier this year.
