Bitcoin slipped below the $71,000 mark on Sunday after geopolitical tensions escalated following the United States’ decision to block the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route.

The move came after failed peace talks between the US and Iran, with US President Donald Trump stating that negotiations broke down over Iran’s refusal to abandon its nuclear program.

MARKETS REACT TO GEOPOLITICAL ESCALATION

Bitcoin dropped as low as $70,623, falling nearly 2.7% on the day as US futures markets opened. The cryptocurrency initially declined 1.9% following the announcement, reflecting a broader risk-off sentiment across global markets.

At the same time, oil prices surged sharply, jumping 9.5% to $105 per barrel within 30 minutes of market open. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, handling around 20% of global oil trade, making any disruption highly sensitive for financial markets.

The renewed tensions have added to volatility seen over the past several weeks, with oil markets experiencing their sharpest swings since the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022.

US-IRAN STANDOFF ADDS TO MARKET UNCERTAINTY

The latest escalation follows weeks of strained relations between the US and Iran. Alongside calls for a ceasefire, Iran had reportedly sought war reparations and the release of frozen financial assets.

However, Trump did not address these demands directly, instead blaming the breakdown in talks on Iran’s nuclear stance. He also accused Iran of deploying mines in the waterway and attempting to charge tolls for passage, describing it as “world extortion.”

In response, the US Navy has been instructed to block vessels complying with Iran’s demands and to neutralize threats in the region.

BITCOIN HOLDS GAINS DESPITE SHORT-TERM DROP

Despite the recent dip, Bitcoin has remained relatively resilient over the broader conflict period. Since the start of the US-Iran tensions on Feb. 28, Bitcoin has gained approximately 7.4%, reaching around $71,194.

The cryptocurrency has also outperformed traditional assets such as equities and gold during this period, recovering part of its earlier losses after reaching a peak of $126,080 in October.

The current price movement highlights Bitcoin’s evolving role as both a risk asset and a potential hedge during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
