Coinbase to Launch Hybrid Futures Product Combining Tech Stocks and Crypto ETFs

Crypto exchange Coinbase is preparing to launch a groundbreaking futures product later this month that combines exposure to leading U.S. technology stocks with cryptocurrency ETFs, offering investors a unique bridge between equities and digital assets.

According to an announcement from Coinbase Derivatives on Tuesday, the new product—called the “Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures”—will go live on Sept. 22. The index will track the so-called “Magnificent 7” tech giants—Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla—alongside BlackRock’s Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) ETFs, as well as Coinbase’s own publicly traded stock.

“Historically, there has been no U.S.-listed derivative that allows investors access to both equities and cryptocurrencies within a single futures product,” the company said, adding that the index is designed to provide exposure to “asset classes that have traditionally traded separately.”

The launch marks Coinbase’s first major derivatives initiative since its $2.9 billion acquisition of Deribit in May, previously the world’s largest crypto options and futures platform. The timing aligns with a surge in derivatives activity: global crypto derivatives trading volume climbed 132% year-on-year in 2024, and 2025 is already on pace to surpass that record, with over $20 trillion traded in just the first half of the year.

Access for retail investors won’t be immediate.

Each component of Coinbase’s upcoming Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures will carry an equal 10% weighting, with initial access reserved for the exchange’s institutional clients.

Coinbase said details on how the product can be traded through partner platforms will be released soon, while retail traders are expected to gain access in the coming months.

The contracts will be structured as monthly, cash-settled instruments, with each unit representing $1 multiplied by the fund’s value. To ensure accuracy, the index will be rebalanced quarterly to reflect shifts in the underlying markets, with MarketVector serving as the official index provider.

Coinbase CEO: New index is part of our ‘everything app’ vision.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said on X Tuesday that the exchange will continue rolling out new products like its upcoming futures index as part of what he calls the “everything exchange.”

The comment follows Coinbase’s mid-July announcement of its broader plan to evolve into a crypto “everything app.” As part of that strategy, the company rebranded Coinbase Wallet into the “Base app,” positioning it as a platform that integrates a wallet, trading, payments, social features, and messaging under one umbrella.
