Prediction markets — long considered a niche corner of crypto — are rapidly crossing into the mainstream, with major institutional backers and cultural milestones signaling what could be decentralized finance’s (DeFi) first truly mass-adopted product.

Mike Rychko, a researcher at prediction market infrastructure firm Azuro, says the simplicity of prediction markets gives them a unique advantage over other crypto tools that have struggled to resonate with the general public.

In an X post on Thursday, Rychko wrote that prediction markets “are entering the real world beyond crypto” and that their ability to communicate probability in a universally understandable way — like “87% chance Mamdani wins” — is what will push them into mass adoption.

“Most people will never open a derivatives exchange,” Rychko noted. “But a prediction market turns complex data into a simple signal that anyone can interpret.”

He added that human behavior tends to favor convenience and clarity, and prediction markets cater to both by transforming vast amounts of data into a single digestible probability — a format that can appeal to even the least financially literate users.

Big Money Is Betting on Predictions

Earlier this month, crypto-native prediction platform Polymarket reportedly secured a $2 billion investment from Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, at a $9 billion valuation — a move that underscores growing institutional confidence in the sector.

The company, founded in 2020, lets users bet stablecoins on real-world outcomes — ranging from elections and sports to entertainment and macroeconomic events. Polymarket’s traction skyrocketed during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, when its trading activity and wallet count surged to record highs.

Reports also suggest the platform could soon launch in the U.S. at a potential $10 billion valuation, following the appointment of the U.S. president’s son to its board of directors — a move that’s drawn both regulatory curiosity and market excitement.

Prediction Markets Enter Pop Culture

Rychko highlighted how prediction markets are now embedding themselves into popular consciousness. Competing U.S.-based platform Kalshi, which operates under the oversight of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), recently unveiled a Times Square-style ticker showing live odds for New York City’s mayoral race.

That display — which has been viewed over 13 million times on X — represents a “real-time reflection of collective belief,” Rychko said, likening it to the stock tickers that came to symbolize Wall Street’s dominance in the 1980s.

Kalshi’s cultural relevance was further cemented when it was featured in an episode of South Park that satirized political betting during the Trump presidency — a milestone few DeFi products can claim.

Massive On-Chain Growth and Real-World Appeal

Despite its centralized regulatory status, Kalshi’s rise complements the explosion of crypto-native prediction platforms like Polymarket.

According to Dune Analytics, Polymarket saw over 72,000 active wallets on Jan. 19, 2025 — its highest ever. The platform processed nearly 590,000 transactions in a single day on Dec. 27, 2024, and continues to post monthly volumes above $1 billion, bringing total cumulative activity to over $15.7 billion.

Data from DefiLlama shows the total value locked (TVL) in Polymarket stands at $194 million — down from its $512 million peak during the election frenzy but still 2,300% higher year-on-year.

Rychko believes this enduring growth shows how prediction markets have evolved beyond speculation:

“They’re becoming a public signal — a way for people to express, visualize, and even trade collective beliefs.”

With major financial institutions, regulators, and mainstream audiences taking notice, prediction markets could soon define a new frontier where finance, technology, and culture intersect.
