Elon Musk has confirmed that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, will roll out the first beta version of Grokipedia — an AI-driven knowledge platform positioned as a direct alternative to Wikipedia — within the next two weeks.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO described Grokipedia as xAI’s answer to “falsehoods” and “half-truths” found across existing knowledge repositories. Announcing the development on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Musk said the “version 0.1 early beta” will launch in about a fortnight.
Musk first revealed plans for Grokipedia on Sept. 30, calling it “a massive improvement over Wikipedia” and a necessary step toward xAI’s broader mission of “understanding the universe.”
While Musk has not shared many specifics, he has previously hinted that Grokipedia will be an open-source, verifiable knowledge repository, designed to ensure factual accuracy using AI-driven validation methods.
Brainstormed live, built fast
The idea for Grokipedia reportedly emerged spontaneously during a live panel discussion on The All-In Podcast in September. When explaining how xAI’s chatbot Grok scans multiple sources — including Wikipedia entries, academic documents, and PDFs — to assess truthfulness, co-host David Sacks suggested Musk should create a standalone version of this tool. Musk replied, “I’ll talk to the team about it.”
He elaborated that Grok’s system classifies content as true, partially true, false, or incomplete and then rewrites it to reflect what xAI deems the most accurate information available.
Musk’s long-standing feud with Wikipedia
Musk has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia for what he claims are political biases and selective censorship. He has accused the platform of promoting misinformation and skewing its editorial approach toward left-leaning narratives.
In a now-famous 2023 post, Musk offered to pay the Wikimedia Foundation $1 billion if it changed its name to “Dikipedia,” taking a jab at what he saw as ideological bias and questionable fundraising efforts.
Last week, Musk revived the joke while commenting on investor Chamath Palihapitiya’s post claiming that “Wikipedia is a massive psyop.”
Wikipedia’s credibility controversies
Wikipedia, known for its community-driven editing model, has long faced scrutiny over accuracy and neutrality. In a September 30 interview with Tucker Carlson, Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger — who left the project in 2002 — accused the platform of ideological gatekeeping.
“There is a whole army of administrators — hundreds of them — who are constantly blocking people that they have ideological disagreements with,” Sanger claimed, adding that certain scholarly sources, including religious and conservative publications, are “not allowed on Wikipedia.”
Musk has framed xAI’s mission as building systems that prioritize truth, transparency, and diversity of sources — areas he believes existing platforms fail to uphold.
xAI’s expanding vision
Beyond Grokipedia, Musk hinted that xAI is also moving into AI-generated gaming. In a separate post on Sunday, he revealed that the company’s xAI Game Studio aims to release a fully AI-created game before the end of next year.
