Stablecoin growth and the role of banks

Reuters reported that Panetta anticipated further stablecoin development but said its eventual role was difficult to predict. He expected commercial-bank money to become increasingly tokenized.

These comments describe a policymaker’s expectations. They do not announce a requirement for every bank to issue tokens or set a binding timetable for doing so.

Different claims on different issuers

A bank deposit, a central-bank liability and a privately issued stablecoin have different issuers and contractual arrangements. Putting them on digital infrastructure does not automatically make their protection or redemption rights identical.
