How the journey developed

In his own account, Finney described work with Phil Zimmermann on PGP and an interest in cryptography that protected individual privacy. He participated in the cypherpunk community before Bitcoin existed.

Contribution to crypto

Finney tested Bitcoin at an exceptionally early stage and described receiving a test transaction from Satoshi. His retrospective explains the experience as an engineering experiment, including running software and corresponding about problems.

Why the work matters

His career connects practical privacy software with the early testing of digital cash. That contribution differs from founding an exchange or issuing a later token. First-person records are especially useful here because later retellings often blend documented events with speculation about Bitcoin’s creator.
