How the journey developed
Haber co-authored research with W. Scott Stornetta on how to timestamp digital documents. Their work addressed the problem of demonstrating that information existed at a particular point without relying only on a document holder’s assertion.
Contribution to crypto
Their timestamping research appears among the references of the Bitcoin paper. Linking records cryptographically became one of the building blocks used in later blockchain designs.
Why the work matters
Timestamping and cryptocurrency are not the same system. The historical importance lies in making records harder to alter unnoticed and creating verifiable relationships between them. Recognizing that narrower contribution gives a more accurate account than calling any single precursor the complete invention of modern crypto.
