Benet’s work focuses on the infrastructure used to address, distribute and preserve information. Protocol Labs’ biography identifies him as the inventor of IPFS and Filecoin and founder of Protocol Labs.
Contribution to crypto
IPFS concerns content-addressed data distribution, while Filecoin adds a distinct network and economic system around storage. They are related projects, but their functions should not be collapsed into one description.
Why the work matters
A content identifier can help verify that retrieved data matches an expected object; it does not by itself guarantee that somebody will keep storing it indefinitely. Benet’s projects are useful for understanding the difference between identifying content, making it available and creating incentives for storage.
