Political pressure on the Federal Reserve is resurfacing, and analysts say it could strengthen Bitcoin’s appeal as a non-sovereign hedge.

A criminal investigation into Jerome Powell is adding a fresh political layer to global markets, with some analysts arguing the development could quietly bolster Bitcoin’s long-term narrative as a non-sovereign asset.

US federal prosecutors are reportedly examining testimony Powell gave to the Senate related to renovations of Federal Reserve buildings. In a public statement on Sunday, Powell framed the probe as a byproduct of the central bank’s independence, saying the Federal Reserve sets policy based on what it believes serves the public interest — not political demands.

The investigation comes against the backdrop of renewed pressure from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Powell and the Fed for resisting calls to cut interest rates. While the probe introduces short-term uncertainty for US equities and other risk assets, some market watchers see a different implication for crypto.

Analysts at Bitunix say the episode could reinforce Bitcoin’s positioning outside traditional political and monetary systems. When confidence in the dollar or the independence of central banks is questioned, they argue, decentralized assets tend to attract a narrative-driven risk premium.

Over the long term, sustained political interference in monetary policy could strengthen Bitcoin’s role as a hedge against sovereign risk, according to the analysts. Bitcoin was trading modestly higher over the past 24 hours, while privacy-focused assets such as Monero and Zcash posted sharper gains, reflecting renewed interest in censorship-resistant technologies.

Bitcoin analyst Will Clemente echoed that view, noting that rising geopolitical risk, pressure on central banks and sovereign reserve diversification are conditions closely aligned with Bitcoin’s original design philosophy.

Sentiment stabilizes, but smart money stays cautious

Alongside the political developments, crypto sentiment indicators are showing early signs of stabilization. Data from Matrixport suggests the moving average of its Greed and Fear Index is forming a base, a pattern that has historically coincided with local bottoms in Bitcoin.

Still, positioning data tells a more cautious story. According to Nansen, so-called smart money traders remain net short Bitcoin, holding roughly $127 million in bearish exposure, with additional short positions added over the past day.

At the same time, institutional wallets appear more constructive on select large-cap tokens. Nansen data shows smart money is net long Ether and XRP, signaling expectations for relative outperformance even as uncertainty lingers around Bitcoin’s short-term direction.
